Click to view NEPT informationThe Bristol Resource Recovery Facility began commercial operations in May 1988. The facility processes 650 tons per day of solid waste into 16.3 megawatts of renewable energy. Most of the energy is sold to Connecticut Light and Power, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities. The plant is owned and operated by Covanta Energy under a 25-year agreement with the Bristol Resource Recovery Facility Operating Committee (BRRFOC), a consortium representing the towns of Berlin, Branford, Bristol, Burlington, Hartland, New Britain, Plainville, Plymouth, Prospect, Southington, Seymour, Warren, Washington, and Wolcott. The towns have a combined population of about 300,000.
