<h2><strong>Protecting Our Environment</strong></h2>
<p>Covanta takes its role as an environmental steward and global citizen very seriously. Protecting our natural resources for future generations is a fundamental principal of Covanta's mission.</p>
<p>In terms of our core business, Covanta offers renewable energy and environmentally friendly waste disposal solutions that:</p>
<ul>
<li>Offset greenhouse gases and combat global warming</li>
<li>Reduce the amount of waste landfilled, thereby protecting open space </li>
<li>Protect the environment by employing state-of-the-art equipment and systems</li>
<li>Maximize recycling and the reuse of resources (water, metals and ash)</li>
</ul>
<p>We have adopted an Environmental Policy that consists of five principals:</p>

<li><strong>Protection</strong> - We will conduct our business in an environmentally sound manner that is protective of human health and the environment.</li>
<li><strong>Compliance</strong> - We will manage our work to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and requirements.</li>
<li><strong>Conservation</strong> - We will minimize impact to the environment by encouraging pollution prevention at the source, waste minimization, facilitating use of recycling opportunities and responsible disposal of any production by-products.</li>
<li><strong>Qualification</strong> - We will ensure that all employees have the necessary information, resources, and training to make informed environmental decisions.</li>
<li><strong>Commitment</strong> - Covanta is committed to be an industry leader in environmental protection by achieving superior awareness and performance through a process of continuous improvement.</li>
</ol>
<p>Energy-from-Waste is the most responsible means of solid waste disposal. It reduces the volume of waste, which must ultimately be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, generates valuable renewable energy, and results in a net reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional landfilling practices. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Energy-from-Waste facilities generate power "with less environmental impact than almost any other source of electricity."</p>
<p>Nearly all of Covanta's facilities are "renewable,” using municipal solid waste, landfill gas, wood and hydro power to generate electricity, while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Covanta processes approximately 20 million tons of municipal solid waste each year conserving over 25,000,000 cubic yards of landfill space and generating 9,000,000-megawatt hours of electricity, the equivalent of burning 3.5 million tons of coal. All of Covanta's Energy-from-Waste projects feature state-of-the-art air pollution controls.</p>

Before joining Covanta Mr. Gilman was the Director of the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies. He served as the Assistant Administrator for Research and Development and Science Advisor at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 2002 until 2004. Prior to joining EPA, he was Director for Policy Planning at Celera Genomics. Mr. Gilman was previously the Executive Director of life sciences and agriculture divisions of the National Research Council of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering. In addition, Mr. Gilman has held several senior government positions, including Associate Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for Natural Resources, Energy, and Science, and Executive Assistant to the Secretary of Energy for technical matters. From April 2008 to April 2009, he served as President of The Wright Group, Inc., a boutique Human Capital consulting firm. Prior to starting his own business, Mr. Wright spent 25 years serving in a variety of positions at the Altria family of companies (Kraft and Philip Morris). He most recently served as Vice President-Human Resources & Technology for Altria Corporate Services, Inc. in New York where he was primarily responsible for the team of Human Resources generalists supporting the global functional organizations and Senior Leadership of Altria Group, Inc.</p>
<p>Mr. Wright is a member of the Executive Leadership Council, an organization founded to provide African-American officers and executives of corporations (primarily Fortune 500) with a professional network and forum to offer perspective and direction on national economic and public policy issues. <p>Seth Myones joined Covanta in 1989 as business manager and in 1994 was promoted to Vice President, Regional Business Manager. During his tenure in the business management group, he oversaw the Mid-Atlantic Region responsible for all business aspects of the seven energy-from-waste facilities located in the region. In 2001, he was given oversight of all business aspects of Covanta’s domestic operations. He was instrumental in helping the restructuring of the Company into a profitable energy-from-waste business. In 2004, Mr. Myones was promoted to Senior Vice President and in addition to oversight of the Company’s entire domestic business; he has overseen the Corporate Communications, Government Relations, and Purchasing functions within the organization. <p>Allard Nooy became President, in March 2008, of Covanta Energy Asia Pacific, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corporation. With more than 18 years of business experience in Asia, Mr. Nooy has worked successfully with municipal governments to develop, acquire, and manage infrastructure projects throughout the region. Project formats have varied widely, including: Public Private Partnerships, Build Operate Transfer projects, and Design Build Finance and Operate structures.</p>
<p>Before joining Covanta, Mr. Nooy was Regional Director, Infrastructure Development with Leighton, Australia's largest engineering and contracting group. From the Asian head office in Hong Kong, he managed Leighton's business in China as well as its infrastructure development and investment activities throughout the region. Prior to joining Leighton, Mr. Nooy was Thames Water International’s Regional Director for Greater China, where he initiated and led numerous M&A transactions and oversaw joint-venture and other projects in China and Hong Kong. </p>
<p>Earlier in his career, Mr. Nooy was based in Vietnam, where he served as the General Manager of Vermeer - Ballast Nedam, an international EPC group. <p>Scott Whitney joined Covanta in 1987 as a Senior Marketing Representative and has held various positions since that time, including most recently Senior Vice President, Business Development. In December, 2007, Mr. Whitney was promoted to President, Covanta Europe. He has substantial experience over the past 20 years in the development and implementation of renewable energy facilities in the United States including coordination of competitive bid preparation, government, public and media relations, operation & maintenance and construction contract negotiation, permitting and financing.
