Covanta Springfield, LLC is an active and supportive community member. We believe that we have a responsibility to give back to the community by investing in the communities where we operate; providing jobs for local residents; and supporting education, the environment, social and economic development. During its history, the facility has been a sponsor of many public, private and non-profit organizations. Sponsorship has included in-kind donations of monetary funds, equipment, and/or time and labor.
Covanta Springfield, LLC has generously supported the U.S. Marine Corp Toys for Tots program and the Easter Seals campaign for many years. In addition, the facility staff works with all contract communities to encourage more recycling. The facility continues to offer economical and efficient mercury-bearing product recycling, such as fluorescent bulb and battery recycling to municipalities and the business sector.
Covanta Springfield, LLC also offers tours to local public and private schools and colleges throughout the year, many of which have incorporated energy-from-waste as part of their curriculum. Specifically, after a year of planning, in 2006 the Pioneer Valley facility was chosen to host twenty 9th grade classes from the High School of Science and Technology in Springfield for onsite Physical Science lessons in conjunction with the adjacent wastewater treatment plant. This off-campus learning program was developed by “This World Is Our Classroom” which stresses that hands-on education may prove to be more beneficial to certain students. The Pioneer Valley facility also annually hosts the Agawam 5th graders in a “train-the-presenters” event during which time plant staff is interviewed, photos or videos taken, with the intent of imparting the presenters new knowledge to the remaining students. This field trip is now an integrated part of the 5th grade Agawam School system.
